Potstown Open Day Success
Sep 8, 2017
We recently attended an Open Day at Potstown Farm in Middlebie and it was a great success.
Potstown have seen some big changes over the last few years and we were delighted to be a part of that; with the introduction of four new Lely robot milkers, and the new shed that we constructed for them.
Cow comfort and animal welfare have been a top priority for the Owen family and they have once again been named as one of the top 20 dairy herds in Scotland.
Our new housing unit has allowed their farm to grow significantly; our 300ft by 140ft building can accommodate all 240 cows. They now have the comfort of new 50mm double foam mattresses and cubicles from Easyfix and supplied by James Smith Fencing.
One of the main concerns was that prior to the new dairy housing unit, the Owens noticed cows picking up injuries in their existing steel cubicles – things like abrasions on their back and lameness from the hard flooring.
Our new facilities have already seen a substantial boost to livestock welfare, with animals now being kept inside throughout the year.
Animal welfare has also been improved by the introduction of four new Lely robots between 2012 and 2015, supplied by Lely Centre in Longtown. These allow the cattle to roam freely in to the milking stalls when they wish, with an average three times milking per cow per day.
Now, however with a 200 plus cow herd, they are not only reaping the rewards of the robots but also the new, more comfortable housing.
It was great to be back on site and see the team at Potstown Open Day and see that the cows are enjoying their new home so much and to hear how they are leading the way in the local area with their herd.
